The best day trips from Hanoi are Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay, and if you can give it a night, Sapa and Cat Ba Island are even better. I know because Hanoi was my home base for the whole north of Vietnam. I stayed at the same hotel the entire time, and they held onto my (very broken) suitcase while I ran off to Ha Long Bay, Cat Ba, Sapa and Ninh Binh with just my backpacks.

Honestly, that’s the best way to do it. Book your Hanoi hotel for however many days you’ll be doing day trips, leave your big bag there and come back in between. Some of these trips work in a day. Some really don’t. Here’s how I did each one, what I’d change and what I’d book now.

TripTime from Hanoi (one way)Day trip or overnight? What I paid (2022)Book
Ninh BinhAbout 2 to 2.5 hoursWorks in a day. I’d stay 2 nights$44 day tour with hotel pickupNinh Binh day tour
Ha Long BayAbout 2.5 to 3 hoursDay trip works; overnight cruise for more time on the water$15 outbound minivan + about $22 boat day tourDay cruise / overnight cruise
Cat Ba Island and Lan Ha BayAbout 3.5 hours by bus + boatAt least 1 night80,000 VND ferry with my motorbikeHa Long and Lan Ha cruise
SapaAbout 5.5 to 6.5 hours by roadAt least 1 night, plus travel timeAbout $52 for the 2-day trek and homestayTa Van homestay trek

Only have one day? Do Ninh Binh. Have one night? Go to Sapa.

For Sapa, allow two sightseeing days and the journeys from and back to Hanoi. One homestay night is the minimum, not a 24-hour round trip. Ask your Hanoi hotel about luggage storage before you leave; policies and fees vary.

1. Ninh Binh: The Best Day Trip From Hanoi

How I Did Ninh Binh in a Day

I booked a Hoa Lu, Trang An and Mua Cave day tour from Hanoi, combining the old capital, the cave boat ride and the viewpoint climb. The bus picked me up at An Hotel at 7:45 AM, and I paid $44 in 2022. I was trying to maximize my time, so Ninh Binh got its own full day after my Sapa trip.

The Mua Cave viewpoint is the climb to prepare for. There are about 500 stone steps, and they’re steep. I was out of breath at the top, but the view was worth it. Wear sneakers and leave yourself time to stop along the way.

Trang An or Tam Coc?

I did the Trang An boat ride. Tam Coc is another option in the same area, with a different river route through limestone scenery and rice fields.

Read the option name before booking a Ninh Binh tour. Some listings combine Trang An and Tam Coc in the title but take you to only one of them. The tour linked below currently offers both choices, and its Trang An option carries an extra charge. Tell the operator which route you want.

If you’re going independently, allow a couple of hours or more for the boat outing, depending on the route. Confirm the current ticket price and what’s included at your chosen dock.

Is Ninh Binh Worth a Day Trip?

Yes, but part of a day wasn’t enough for me. I’d give it at least two nights and stay near Tam Coc or Mua Cave. That gives you time between the boat ride and the viewpoint instead of moving through everything on the bus schedule.

You can also travel independently by train or compare vans to Ninh Binh. Allow roughly two to two and a half hours for the road journey, depending on the pickup and destination. Confirm whether your ticket ends in Ninh Binh city or Tam Coc.

Check prices for a Ninh Binh day tour. The listing showed from US$46 per person on October 1, 2026, with a US$5 Trang An surcharge. Select the Trang An route and confirm your Hanoi pickup. This is a current booking option, not a claim that it is the company I used in 2022.

Tam Coc Horizon Bungalow has a pool near Thai Vi Temple. Tamcoc Sunseekers Homestay & Hostel is another Tam Coc option. Both had Booking.com scores above 9/10 when checked. These are researched stays; I haven’t stayed at either.

2. Ha Long Bay Day Trip From Hanoi (or Overnight Cruise?)

I didn’t do Ha Long as a same-day trip from Hanoi. I took a $15 minivan, spent three days around the bay (two nights in Ha Long City and one very unplanned night on Cat Ba) and did a one-day boat tour from Ha Long City. So here’s what the day trip actually involves, and how my version went.

How to Get From Hanoi to Ha Long Bay

I booked my minivan through Bookaway the day before leaving Hanoi. You can compare current Hanoi–Ha Long transfers on 12Go. Some departures sold out within minutes while I was looking. I paid $15 in 2022.

My hotel kept my broken suitcase, and I took a Grab bike to the pickup point with my backpacks. The outbound minivan didn’t collect me at the hotel. There were about nine of us, water and towels, and one bathroom stop along the way. With the pickups and drop-offs, the trip took about three hours.

At my drop-off in Ha Long, I couldn’t get a ride through the apps I was using. A woman helped call a taxi, and I paid 85,000 VND for the roughly six-kilometer ride to my hotel. That was my experience in 2022.

The return was easier: a limousine minivan picked me up at Linh Dan Hotel at 11 AM and dropped me at An Hotel in Hanoi around 1 PM.

For a current day trip, check the Hanoi-transfer option on the cruise listing. The linked tour allows roughly two and a half hours on the expressway, plus a stop. Limousine vans, coaches and private cars are alternatives if you’re staying in Ha Long City. Confirm the exact drop-off, since the city and the cruise port are different destinations.

My Ha Long Bay Day Tour

I typically don’t really like to do tours, but this one had so many stops that I booked it. I paid about $22 in 2022, starting from Ha Long City. That didn’t include the minivan from Hanoi or my hotel.

The harbor was full of buses and groups. I got a badge with my group information and had Vietnamese black coffee while waiting. I was told weekends brought even more local visitors, so keep that in mind if you have flexibility.

There were about 30 people on my boat. From the top deck, it was almost a 360-degree view of limestone mountains and boats. I met another solo traveler who taught me a dance, which is how a sightseeing day turned into dancing with a stranger on the deck.

We stopped at a huge limestone cave. It was cool inside, a relief from the roughly 88°F heat outside.

There was a kayaking and bamboo-boat stop, where we were told not to bring our cameras. Then came Ti Top Island, with a choice between swimming and climbing to the viewpoint. I hiked up in slippers with my backpack and timed myself at five minutes and 36 seconds. It’s not a race. Wear proper shoes, go at your own pace, and check when your boat leaves.

The forecast had said rain all day, and I almost skipped the trip. It mostly drizzled while we were out, and the clouds made the bay look moody. The rain picked up on the way back. That’s how my day went; a cruise can still be changed or cancelled when conditions are unsafe.

Ha Long Bay Day Trip vs Overnight Cruise

The day tour was great for the time I had. If you’re traveling solo, I think either a day trip or an overnight works. With family or a partner, I’d lean toward the overnight cruise.

From Hanoi, a day trip means about five to six hours on the road in addition to the cruise. The linked operator advertises an early pickup and a return around 9 PM.

An overnight cruise gives you the evening and early morning on the bay, with a cabin instead of the same-day drive back. I haven’t done that version myself. Compare the total cost, including transfers and any single-cabin supplement, before deciding.

For the overnight version as part of a longer planned route, see my breakdown of the 10-day Luxury Escapes Vietnam tour.

Book a Ha Long Bay day cruise from Hanoi. The listing showed from US$39 on October 1, 2026, but Hanoi transport depends on the option. Its port-only meeting instructions list a US$10 transfer add-on. Confirm the total for your selected departure.

Staying in Ha Long City like I did? Choose a cruise that starts at the port, and arrange your hotel-to-port transfer. The day-cruise listing also has a port-meeting option. Select that version rather than paying for a Hanoi transfer you won’t use.

Compare the 2-day Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay cruise. The listing showed from US$126 per person on October 1, 2026. Its exclusions list US$25 round-trip transport and a US$90 solo-cabin supplement. Confirm the selected cabin and final total.

If you stay in Ha Long City, I stayed at Linh Dan Hotel in Bai Chay, near the amusement park, with food around at all hours. I booked the hotel separately, and my return van collected me there.

I also rented a motorbike and explored with a local who showed me the Poem Mountain area and Ha Long market. The mountain itself was closed when I visited. He told me fish at that market was about half the price of the tourist-side markets, and I gave durian another try.

3. Cat Ba Island and Lan Ha Bay (Give It a Night)

How I Got to Cat Ba (and Got Stuck)

A local told me I’d regret skipping Cat Ba, and it became my favorite island in Vietnam. I took my motorbike on the ferry from the Ha Long side and paid 80,000 VND with the bike in 2022. I was the last one on and nearly missed it.

At Cat Ba National Park, I climbed to Ngu Lam peak. It took me about 25 minutes to get up, with the steepest part near the end. The orange railings followed the route, and the view opened over so many green mountains.

I did that hike in slippers too. Please wear closed-toe shoes. I also ran out of water, which is another thing to plan better than I did.

Afterward, I rode to Ben Beo harbor hoping to get a boat to Lan Ha Bay. I arrived too late. I didn’t sail Lan Ha Bay, and I ended up spending an unplanned night on Cat Ba without a toothbrush or conditioner.

I walked into a hotel after the hostel I’d researched turned out to be closed. It was Cong Khanh Hotel, and I paid 400,000 VND in cash. The next morning, I headed back toward Ha Long for my van to Hanoi. Check both the last sightseeing boat and the last return ferry before you build a same-day plan around them.

Things to Do on Cat Ba Island

Give the island at least one night if you want time for the national park and a Lan Ha Bay outing. Boat trips leave from Ben Beo, while the park hike is a separate stop on land. A cruise cabin and a hotel on Cat Ba are different ways to stay; check what each itinerary actually visits.

From Hanoi, a combined bus-and-boat transfer avoids arranging each connection yourself. Cat Ba Outdoors currently advertises about three and a half hours, with fares from 350,000 VND on its transport page. The ferry from the Ha Long side is another route, but confirm the operating schedule before relying on it.

Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba archipelago are part of the same UNESCO World Heritage property. That doesn’t mean every cruise visits the national park or gives you free time in Cat Ba Town.

See UNESCO’s Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba listing for the protected area, and Cat Ba Outdoors’ transport options for the current connection.

Check the 2-day Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay cruise for an overnight on the water. This is a researched option; I haven’t taken this cruise. If your priority is exploring Cat Ba itself, stay on the island and choose a boat trip from there.

Cat Ba Green Hotel and Cat Ba Green Pearl Hotel are two options around Nui Ngoc in Cat Ba Town. Both scored 8.8/10 on Booking.com when checked. I haven’t stayed at either; they’re alternatives for planning your own island stay.

4. Sapa From Hanoi: My Favorite, but Not a Day Trip

If I had to pick my favorite, it’s Sapa. I freaking love Sapa. The homestay, the rice paddies, and walking through villages with a local guide were exactly the kind of experience I was looking for.

Green rice terraces and a winding path beneath misty mountains in Sapa

But it’s roughly five and a half to six and a half hours each way from Hanoi by road. Give it at least one night in the area and two days for the trek, with enough time for the journeys. Trying to squeeze it into a same-day round trip would leave almost no time for the part I loved.

Hanoi to Sapa by Sleeper Bus

I took the 10 PM sleeper bus from Hanoi’s Old Quarter. I was the last one to board and ended up sharing a $14 bed with a stranger. By the time I got to Sapa, I was running on about three hours of sleep.

A daytime limousine van is another road option. The overnight train goes to Lao Cai, where you still need a road transfer up to Sapa. Compare the full journey and arrival time, including that connection, instead of comparing the train ticket alone with a bus to Sapa town.

Trekking Sapa With a Village Homestay

I booked my trek through a small agency in Hanoi. My booking covered two days of trekking and a homestay night, and I paid about $52 in 2022.

My guide, Vu, met me after the bus. Two other people didn’t turn up, so it became a girls’ day.

The first day’s route on my booking was Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai and Ta Van. We had a choice between the easier road and a muddy natural path. I took the path. Even with the rain and mud, I called it heaven on earth.

It took about four hours and seven kilometers to reach Lao Chai, Vu’s village. The fog kept moving through the mountains, and the scenery could change from rain to clear in minutes. A local woman walked with us for a while and gave me a bracelet.

We continued to Ta Van for the homestay. My room reminded me of a bungalow, and there was a cooking class that evening. Staying there was a big part of why I loved the trip. I was looking for more local experiences, and the homestay gave me time beyond the walk itself.

For the second day, I rented rain boots for 30,000 VND because my hiking boots would’ve disappeared in the mud. My rain jacket had a hole in it too. There were short downpours through the day, with drizzle in between.

My booking listed Sin Chai village on day two and a return to Sapa town by 2 PM. Along the trek, I saw carved stones and learned how clothing differed between communities. Vu also explained the limits on building across the rice terraces. Those conversations were why I’d tell anyone to go with a guide.

The low fog and mountains reminded me, in a weird way, of Iceland in Asia. I made sure I had cash to tip Vu. Bring small bills, and leave yourself time to enjoy the walk without watching the clock for a rushed connection back to Hanoi.

You can also watch my first day trekking to Vu’s village.

Check dates for the Sapa homestay trek. This online option shares the Lao Chai and Ta Van route and a Ta Van overnight with my trip. I booked locally, not through Viator, and the current itinerary has a different second-day route through Giang Ta Chai. It does not guarantee my guide or homestay.

The listing showed from US$59 on October 1, 2026. Confirm the departure, transport, room type and inclusions for your option. For an extra night in Sapa town, Mega View Homestay is a separate accommodation option. I haven’t stayed there, and it isn’t the Ta Van homestay from my trek.

Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh: Which Is Better?

For one free day based in Hanoi, Ninh Binh is the more practical choice. You spend less time reaching the area, and a day tour combines the boat ride with Hoa Lu and Mua Cave. My one-day visit still felt too short, which is why I’d stay two nights if I could do it again.

Ha Long Bay makes sense if the boat itself is what you’re looking forward to. You spend the day out among limestone islands, with stops for caves, kayaking or a viewpoint depending on the cruise. The trade-off is the longer return journey from Hanoi, or the extra night if you choose a cabin.

Ninh Binh or Sapa? Sapa was my favorite. Before going, I was debating the two because the rice terraces looked so different, and pictures really don’t do Sapa justice. I ended up seeing both. If you have enough time for the trek and a homestay, that’s the experience I’d be most excited to repeat. If you need to sleep in Hanoi that night, choose Ninh Binh.

How to Plan Day Trips From Hanoi

Using one Hanoi hotel as my base made the north easier to organize. I could leave the big suitcase and return between trips instead of carrying everything to the boat, ferry and homestay. Ask about storage before booking, including whether the hotel will keep your bag between separate stays.

For Old Quarter pickup, get the exact meeting place in writing. The current Ninh Binh and Ha Long listings warn that traffic restrictions can mean walking to a meeting point instead of being collected at your hotel. Allow time to get there with your bag.

Carry dong in small notes for fees and tips, and download offline maps before leaving. I used offline Google Maps on Cat Ba. If you’re planning the wider route, my Vietnam guide covers how these northern stops fit together.

Where to Stay in Hanoi for Day Trips

I stayed at An Hotel, now listed as An Nguyen Boutique Hotel in the northern Old Quarter near Dong Xuan Market. I really liked how spacious it was. They held my suitcase, my Ninh Binh tour picked me up there, and my return van from Ha Long dropped me there.

The Old Quarter is a useful base for these trips, although pickup arrangements depend on your street and operator. TrangTrang Boutique Hotel and Golden Rooster Hotel are two other options from my Vietnam guide; I haven’t stayed at either.

Motorbikes and storefronts along a busy street in Hanoi

Hanoi felt safe to me as a solo traveler and worked well as a base for the north. My solo travel tips and Southeast Asia travel guide cover more of the planning around a trip like this.

What to Pack for Northern Vietnam

Pack for the activities and the possibility of a night away. My Cat Ba bag was missing a toothbrush and conditioner because I thought I’d be back that evening.

For Sapa, bring closed-toe shoes or hiking boots with grip, a layer for cooler nights, and a rain jacket. I ended up renting rain boots, and my jacket had a hole, which is why I tell people to bring a second lightweight rain layer. Check whether your homestay can lend or rent boots before relying on that option.

A power bank, microfiber towel and small notes in dong are useful across these trips. Carry enough drinking water for the walks, and check your cruise’s bottle rules before boarding. Keep the bag small enough to carry comfortably when you change vehicles.

My ultralight minimalist travel packing list has the rest of my packing setup.

Best Time for Day Trips From Hanoi

For Ha Long Bay, Vietnam’s official tourism guide describes April and May as sunny and September through November as cooler with clearer skies. June through August is less predictable, and winter into early spring can be misty. Check the marine forecast and your cruise operator’s update close to departure.

For trekking, the official Sapa guide points to April and May or September and October. Expect chilly conditions from November through March.

I visited in June and had rain on and off. It didn’t stop me loving Sapa or enjoying the bay, but it changed what I needed to wear and carry. Leave some flexibility around boat travel, especially if you have a flight afterward.

Day Trips From Hanoi FAQ

Can you do a day trip from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay?

Yes. A cruise with Hanoi transfers makes it possible, but expect an early start and a late return. The linked operator currently advertises arriving back around 9 PM. My own boat day started in Ha Long City, where I was staying, so it didn’t include that same-day round trip from Hanoi.

How much does a Ha Long Bay day trip from Hanoi cost?

The linked cruise showed from US$39 per person on October 1, 2026, with Hanoi transport dependent on the option. Its port-only instructions list a US$10 transfer add-on. Check the selected total before booking. My approximately $22 boat tour was in 2022 and started in Ha Long City; transport and accommodation were separate.

Is Ninh Binh worth a day trip from Hanoi?

Yes. A full day can cover Hoa Lu, one boat route and Mua Cave, with transport arranged between them. I did that combination with the Trang An boat ride and paid $44 in 2022. I still wished I had longer and would stay at least two nights around Tam Coc or Mua Cave.

Can you do Sapa as a day trip from Hanoi?

Sapa is too far for a worthwhile same-day round trip from Hanoi. The road journey takes roughly five and a half to six and a half hours each way. Plan at least one night in Sapa or a village homestay, two days for a trek like mine, and time for both journeys.

Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh: which is better?

Ninh Binh is easier with one free day from Hanoi because the journey is shorter and a tour can combine several stops. Ha Long Bay suits a day on a larger boat, or an overnight cruise. Choose based on how much time you want on the water and whether you can stay overnight.

Ninh Binh or Sapa?

Sapa is my favorite for trekking and a village homestay. Ninh Binh works better when you only have a day and need to return to Hanoi that evening. I almost chose between them and ended up doing both. Give Sapa enough time for the journey, walking and homestay instead of rushing it.

Where else can I go from Hanoi?

The Perfume Pagoda and Bat Trang pottery village are other options to research from Hanoi. I haven’t visited those, so the firsthand sections here cover Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Cat Ba and Sapa. I stuck to the four I’d actually send you to, with the time each one needs clearly explained.

When should you avoid Ha Long Bay?

Avoid going out when your operator or the local authorities suspend sailings for unsafe conditions. Summer monsoon weather can disrupt cruises, but weather can affect any departure. Check close to your trip and leave a buffer before flights.

Will Hanoi hotels hold your luggage while you do day trips?

Some will, but ask before counting on it. An Hotel held my suitcase while I traveled around the north. Confirm whether storage is available between bookings, whether there’s a fee, and when you can collect your bag. Keep your passport, valuables and anything you need overnight with you.
