This 10-day Thailand itinerary is the exact route I’d take if you’re short on time: Bangkok for 3 days, Chiang Mai for 2, Phuket for 2 and Krabi for 3, with an overnight train, one flight and a boat ride in between. Altogether, I’ve spent about three months in Thailand over several trips and stayed in more than 15 hotels.
Bangkok is the place I kept going back to. To me, it’s the New York of Asia. That’s just my opinion, but it’s big, busy and there’s always something going on, and I feel lucky I’ve been able to spend so much time there on and off.
If you’re deciding between all the Southeast Asia countries, Thailand is a great middle ground. You get the city, the mountains, the party beaches and my favorite place in the whole country. I’ll tell you how I got between each stop, what I actually spent (about $25 to $30 a day, because my hotels and flights were on points) and what I’d do differently.
That daily amount covered food, drinks and snacks. Hotels, intercity transport, activities and your international flight need their own budget. The prices from my trip below are from 2022, and this is a suggested shorter route through places I visited over a much longer trip.
10-Day Thailand Itinerary at a Glance
| Days | Where | Highlights | Getting there | What I paid (2022) | Book |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Bangkok | Temples, street food, markets | Arrive at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) | $34.22 nightly value at Asoke Residence, covered with points | Asoke hotel |
| Night 3 | Sleeper train | Sunset and an overnight berth | Bangkok to Chiang Mai, about 13 hours | About US$40 | Train options |
| 4 to 5 | Chiang Mai | Old City, markets, Doi Suthep | Morning train arrival | $18 to $23 nightly hotel values; motorbike 400 baht for two days | Old City hotel |
| 6 to 7 | Phuket | Bang Tao beach and night market; nightlife | Fly from Chiang Mai; allow a travel morning | Flight: $81 + $18.67 bag, covered with points | Flight options |
| 8 to 10 | Krabi | Ao Nang, a full Railay day | Ferry or road transfer from Phuket | No confirmed cash hotel cost | Ferry / van |
| 10 | Departure | Keep flight day flexible | Krabi (KBV) to Bangkok; Phuket requires a road transfer | My separate Phuket to Bangkok flight was $51.56 | Krabi departures |
This assumes you arrive early enough to use day one and leave late on day ten. It gives you two hotel nights in Bangkok, one night on the train, two in Chiang Mai, two in Phuket and two in Krabi: nine nights total. Late arrivals or early departures shorten the sightseeing time.
Days 1 to 3: Bangkok

Where to Stay in Bangkok for 3 Days
Bangkok is huge. I tried nine hotels across the city during my first long stay, and Asoke was my favorite base because it was convenient for malls and transportation. With only three days, choosing your neighborhood well saves a lot of backtracking.
My pick was Asoke Residence Sukhumvit by UHG. My records put the room at about $34 a night in 2022, covered with points. Use that as an old trip cost, not a room rate you should expect today.
For old Bangkok and photography, I stayed at Sri Krungthep Hotel, which is now called Excel Hotel Bangkok. My note from that stay was “most convenient to photography spots.” It makes sense to compare these two areas against the places you want to spend the most time.

What to Do in Bangkok in 3 Days
Start day one in old Bangkok with Wat Pho and Wat Arun, allowing time for the river crossing between them. Add the Giant Swing if your arrival time and energy allow. I liked photographing it around blue hour, when it was quieter during my visit.
Use day two for Chinatown and street food, then head to Asiatique for the evening. I liked being at Asiatique around sunset. These are separate stops, so leave room for the journey along the river or through traffic instead of treating them as one walk.

Day three needs an early finish for your train. Lumphini Park is an option for a morning in the city. Ancient City, also called Muang Boran, was one of my favorite places to photograph, but it’s outside central Bangkok and deserves a substantial part of the day.

If Ancient City is high on your list, move it to day two and keep Chinatown for the evening. An Ancient City and Erawan Museum tour is one researched option. It adds Erawan Museum to the day; I haven’t confirmed it as my original tour.

See my 7 places to visit in Bangkok for photos and a closer look at each stop.
A few things from my Bangkok trip still belong on the packing list: tissues, comfortable shoes and something suitable for temple visits. The humidity was a lot, and I was very glad to have my own hair products. Carry some cash for small purchases rather than assuming everywhere will accept your card.
Getting Around Bangkok
Motorbike taxis were my favorite way to get around, but they come with more exposure to traffic. A car is the more practical choice with luggage. Walking was the best way for me to explore a neighborhood, with breaks when the heat got tiring.

Bangkok to Chiang Mai: Overnight Sleeper Train or Flight
I took the overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai in March 2022 and paid about US$40 for my berth. It was super cozy. The journey took about thirteen hours, but I slept through most of it.

Back then, I picked up my prebooked tickets from the 12Go office near Hua Lamphong two days before departure. That part of my video is historical: check the terminal and ticket-delivery instructions on your current booking. Don’t go to Hua Lamphong just because you see it in my video.
My train left on the dot. I’d picked that departure because I wanted to watch the sunset, then the staff made up my bed. I seriously slept like a baby and woke up in time for sunrise. If sleeping on a train sounds fun to you, this is one part of the route I’d keep.
For the current journey, look for Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, not Hua Lamphong. Train No. 9 leaves at 6:40 p.m. and reaches Chiang Mai at 7:15 a.m. the next morning. Check the time on your ticket, since schedules can change.
Second class gives you a berth in a shared carriage; first class is the cabin option to compare if privacy matters. Read whether you’re buying an upper or lower berth, and whether a first-class ticket covers one berth or sole use of a cabin. A first-class berth doesn’t automatically mean the whole room is yours.
A second-class berth costs about 940 to 1,040 baht, and the lower berth is the pricier one. First class is about 1,450 to 1,650 baht per berth, or about 2,450 baht to have a cabin to yourself. Booking sites add a small fee. The train also has a restaurant car.
Express and Special Express tickets can be booked up to 180 days ahead under the published SRT booking policy. Check availability for your full route when booking.
Bring a sweater because the air conditioning gets cold, plus water and snacks. There wasn’t food service when I rode during the COVID period. Keep anything you need overnight in a small bag you can reach without unpacking your suitcase.
Flying is the alternative if you don’t sleep well on trains. Compare the full airport-to-hotel journey, baggage charges and the extra Bangkok hotel night, not just the time in the air. A flight on the morning of day four also uses part of your first Chiang Mai day.
Compare Bangkok to Chiang Mai sleeper trains. Select Trains and check the berth, service and delivery method for your date.
Days 4 and 5: Chiang Mai

Where to Stay in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is super walkable, especially when you base yourself around the Old City. I stayed at Parasol Inn Chiang Mai Old City and Rustic River Boutique. Parasol was my Old City option; Rustic River was my stay nearer the river side of town.
What to Do in Chiang Mai in 2 Days
Spend day four around the Old City. Wat Chedi Luang was on my list, and Wat Chiang Man at night was on my list too. Build the day around a few temples with food stops between them, allowing a slower start after the train.
Warorot Market is another stop from my trip. It works as a separate outing beyond the Old City, rather than something you have to rush between temples. If you’re tired after the overnight journey, save the market for later and have a proper lunch first.
Chiang Mai had some of the best food I ate in Thailand. I was full every single day. My old list includes Suki Koka, though I don’t remember every restaurant name well enough to turn this into a food map. Street food was a big part of how I ate there.
If your dates line up, give the evening to a walking street. Sunday is Tha Pae Walking Street, and Saturday is Wua Lai. My Sunday Walking Street video covers the food stalls, clothing and things to browse. Don’t plan the Sunday market on a weekday or rearrange every flight just to fit it.
Day five is for Doi Suthep. Visiting the temple and riding up the mountain was my favorite activity in Chiang Mai. I rented a motorbike, but make sure you’re comfortable riding for your own safety. The trip up is a different proposition from walking around the Old City.

Have More Time? Pai, Mae Wang and a Night Under the Stars
Pai and Mae Wang belong in a longer northern Thailand trip. I spent two nights in Pai and also visited Mae Wang, but they need time beyond these two Chiang Mai days.
At Chai Lai Orchid in Mae Wang, I met another girl who was also traveling solo. We became close enough that we went on to Phuket together and stayed at the Hilton.
If you have time for a night outside the city, read my Norden Glamping review. Allow time for the journey when adding it to your Chiang Mai plans.

Chiang Mai was clear during my March 2022 visit, but I noticed haze farther north in Mae Hong Son, near Pai. Check air quality before committing to mountain days.
Chiang Mai to Phuket
Use day six to travel south. A direct Chiang Mai to Phuket flight keeps this route from doubling back through Bangkok. Check duration and baggage when booking.
I flew from Chiang Mai to Phuket with Thai Airways on March 16, 2022. The flight was $81 plus $18.67 for a bag, covered with points.
Compare Chiang Mai to Phuket flights. Select Flights and check direct services for your dates.
Days 6 and 7: Phuket

Phuket is the beach-and-nightlife stop in this route. In my original itinerary video, I described it as the place for people who love the beach and love to party, with a reminder to stay hydrated. It also felt expensive compared with the other stops on my Thailand trip.
I stayed at Hilton Garden Inn Phuket Bang Tao for five nights with the friend I met at Chai Lai Orchid.

I went to the Bang Tao night market next to the hotel, spent time at the beach and had a night out. The market was great. With two days here, I’d leave the first afternoon for the beach and go to the market in the evening if it’s open on your dates.
A beach day is the easiest fit before the move to Krabi. I also made it to the Phi Phi Islands, and if you want to see Maya Bay on this route, a day trip from Phuket is the simplest way to fit it in. It takes most of your only full Phuket day and depends on sea conditions, so compare pickup times, time on the boat and park fees before you book.
If you want to do it, this Phi Phi day trip by speed catamaran picks you up from your Phuket hotel, includes the national park fees and has free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Plan on about 8.5 hours.

Phuket to Krabi: Ferry, Speedboat or Van
Use day eight for the transfer and an easy afternoon in Ao Nang. Choose your ticket by the actual pier or hotel it serves. “Krabi” can mean Krabi Town, Ao Nang or Railay, and those endpoints aren’t interchangeable when you have luggage.
For the larger ferry, Ao Nang Travel currently lists Phuket Town departures from Rassada Pier to Ao Nang at 900 baht per adult. Its published examples include 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on selected days and 1:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. daily. The same site warns that low-season services don’t operate every day, so confirm a sailing for your date before relying on it.
Check the Ao Nang Travel timetable and the arrival pier with the operator. These listed times and fares were checked October 2, 2026; hotel transfers add time.
Speedboats can be quicker on the water, but compare the complete trip from your hotel. They are more exposed to sea conditions, and a short advertised crossing doesn’t include pickup, check-in or the onward ride to Ao Nang. On 12Go, speedboats take about an hour on the water and start around $21, while the ferry takes about two hours. Prices checked October 7, 2026.
A van or private car gives you a road alternative when boats don’t suit your schedule. Check whether the fare ends at a bus terminal or includes your hotel. Shared vans take about three to four hours and usually cost 400 to 600 baht. A private car takes about three hours and costs about $75 for up to three people.
Stop on Koh Phi Phi only if you’re willing to give it extra time or cut another stop. I went to the Phi Phi Islands on this trip, and I made a short video on how to make your visit unforgettable. Treat an overnight visit as another hotel stay with two separate boat journeys. It’s an optional extension to this route.

Compare Phuket to Krabi ferry and van options. Check the arrival point and whether the onward transfer to your hotel is included.
Days 8 to 10: Krabi

Krabi was my absolute favorite place in all of Thailand. I stayed two nights, and it wasn’t enough. The beaches and limestone scenery are why I’d give it three days in this itinerary.
Ao Nang is the base used here. I stayed at Red Ginger Chic Resort, where I had a two-floor room with a balcony and a floating breakfast basket in the pool.

I came over from Phuket with a local friend who sorted our rides by talking to locals, which was convenient. After Krabi, I went back to Phuket airport to fly to Bangkok. For this shorter itinerary, compare departures from Krabi before planning that return journey.
Give day nine to Railay. I went by boat and only had part of a day there; the change I’d make is spending the whole day. Railay is a peninsula reached by boat, so don’t look for a road transfer that will take you all the way to the beach.

Leave early, agree on the return arrangement before setting off and keep an eye on the weather. Bring what you need for the day in a bag you can keep dry. Having the whole day gives you time to walk and stop for lunch instead of watching for your boat straight away.
Day ten depends on your flight. If you’re leaving Thailand that day, keep it to a local morning, checking out and the trip to Krabi Airport. Avoid a full island-hopping tour before a flight connection you can’t afford to miss.
If you can stay a third night in Krabi and leave on day eleven, use day ten for an island tour or the Emerald Pool. This Emerald Pool, hot springs and Tiger Cave Temple tour is a researched option, listed at nine to nine and a half hours when checked. It isn’t identified as the tour I took. That is the version that gives you three sightseeing days here. Alternatively, swap Railay for the activity you most want, though Railay is the full day I’d keep.

My Krabi trip included the Emerald Pool, Koh Poda and a private boat outing. I also visited Panyee Village, which is in Phang Nga Bay and needs its own excursion planning. It isn’t a quick extra beside Ao Nang or a guaranteed stop on a standard Krabi island tour.

Go early when you can. Getting to places before tour groups was one of my biggest tips from that trip. Compare the actual stops on a boat listing rather than choosing only by the number of islands in its title.

For the photos and more from my stay, read my 2-day Krabi itinerary.
In my video, I suggested bringing a drone for Krabi’s scenery. Check CAAT’s current registration and flight requirements before planning aerial photography, along with local restrictions at your chosen location.
For your departure, compare flights from Krabi Airport to Bangkok first. Returning to Phuket adds a road journey, so include that time before choosing a cheaper airfare. If you connect through Bangkok, check whether both flights use BKK or DMK; changing airports adds another transfer.
How Much Does 10 Days in Thailand Cost?
I spent about $25 to $30 a day on food, drinks and snacks in 2022. Over ten days, that’s $250 to $300 for those expenses. It isn’t the total price of a ten-day Thailand holiday.
In Chiang Mai, I recorded about $50 for a week of food and coffee, with street-food plates around $1.50. Drinks were about 700 baht for the week, and miscellaneous spending was about 500 baht. My two-day motorbike rental cost 400 baht.
My Bangkok hotel records averaged about $29 a night in value, while my Chiang Mai rooms were roughly $18 to $23. I used points, so those values weren’t the cash I handed over. A reader paying cash for every hotel needs a different budget.
I explain more about using points in my travel credit card guide. Compare the current cash rate for your dates before deciding how to pay.
The sleeper train was about $40. My Chiang Mai to Phuket flight was $81 plus $18.67 for baggage; the separate Phuket to Bangkok flight was $51.56. Don’t add these to my food budget and call it an all-inclusive trip price: lodging, local rides, tours, insurance and international flights are still missing.
| Transport | October 2026 planning status |
|---|---|
| Phuket Town to Ao Nang ferry | Operator lists 900 baht per adult; date and sailing confirmation required |
| Bangkok to Chiang Mai sleeper | About 940 to 1,040 baht for second class; 1,450 to 1,650 baht per first-class berth; about 2,450 baht for sole cabin use, plus booking fees |
| Chiang Mai to Phuket flight | Price for your dates with baggage; no current quote verified |
| Phuket to Krabi van or speedboat | Ao Nang speedboats: about 1 hour on the water, from about $21; shared vans: 3 to 4 hours, about 400 to 600 baht; confirm endpoint and date |
Best Time to Visit Thailand for This Route
November to February is generally the easiest window to combine Bangkok and Chiang Mai with the Andaman coast. November can still bring transitional weather, and holiday dates need earlier booking. These are seasonal patterns, not a promise of clear skies every day.
In northern Thailand, smoke can affect trips from February into April, especially March and April. Chiang Mai was clear during my March 2022 visit, but I noticed haze farther north in Mae Hong Son, near Pai. Check conditions for your actual dates rather than treating that memory as a forecast.
NASA’s account of northern Thailand’s smoke season explains why the year and timing matter.
Phuket and Krabi are on the Andaman side. The southwest monsoon generally falls around May to October, when wet weather and rough seas can disrupt boat plans. Leave a road-transfer option and avoid making an international connection depend on a same-day ferry.
Bangkok gets hot well before the rainy season. Plan outdoor sightseeing early, keep water with you and allow indoor breaks. If you’re traveling in the wet months, use the daily forecast to decide between a temple outing and a longer trip outside town.
Thailand Entry Requirements for US Citizens (2026)
U.S. citizens traveling on ordinary U.S. passports can enter for tourism without a visa for up to 30 days under the rules effective September 15, 2026. This was checked October 2 against the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Chicago’s announcement. Confirm the conditions again before travel.
Check passport validity with the Royal Thai Embassy; its current notice specifies at least six months upon returning to your country of residence. Review onward-ticket and funds requirements before departure.
Complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card through Thai Immigration within the three-day submission window before arrival. The official TDAC guide explains the form. The arrival card is separate from your visa or visa exemption.
I extended a 30-day stay at Bangkok immigration in 2022, but that old experience isn’t a promise about a current extension. A ten-day holiday normally fits within the present tourist exemption if you meet its entry conditions.
Thailand has also proposed a 450-baht fee for foreign visitors, with one payment covering 30 days of entries. As of October 2026 it isn’t being collected. It still needs final approval, and collection for air arrivals isn’t expected before 2027, so check the latest before you fly.
Only Have 7 Days? Or 2 Weeks?
For seven days, drop Phuket: Bangkok for two, Chiang Mai for two and Krabi for three. Take the sleeper after day two and look for an onward Chiang Mai to Krabi flight that works on your dates. The arrival and departure days still count, so this remains a quick trip.
With two weeks, add days before adding every extra stop. Give Chiang Mai more time, then choose Pai or Mae Wang as a northern extension. An overnight on Phi Phi is another option between Phuket and Krabi if the boat schedule works.
Phuket or Chiang Mai: Which Should You Cut?
Keep Chiang Mai for temples, northern food and time around the mountains. Keep Phuket if beach time and nightlife are the main reasons you’re coming to Thailand.
For me, Doi Suthep was a favorite activity and Chiang Mai’s food was a big part of the trip. Phuket was the beach-and-party stop in my video. If you already have three days in Krabi, Chiang Mai adds a different kind of stop to the route.
Thailand Itinerary FAQ
Yes, ten days is enough for a first trip with a focused route. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi fit if you’re comfortable moving several times and counting travel days honestly. For a slower holiday, drop one stop. Late arrivals and early departures reduce the sightseeing time in this plan.
This route uses Bangkok for three days, Chiang Mai for two, Phuket for two and Krabi for three, including transfer days. Take the overnight train after Bangkok, fly south and continue to Krabi by boat or road. It suits travelers wanting several different stops; three bases will feel more relaxed.
The full cost depends on your flights, hotels and activities. My 2022 food, drinks and snacks averaged $25 to $30 a day, or $250 to $300 over ten days. That excludes hotels and major transport. I used points for hotels and flights, so those daily food expenses aren’t a complete cash-trip budget.
I thought so. I paid about $40 in 2022, watched the sunset and slept through most of the thirteen-hour trip. It also uses a night for travel. If you struggle to sleep in shared spaces, compare first class or a flight, including baggage, airport transfers and the additional hotel night.
Choose Chiang Mai for temples, food and mountain outings; choose Phuket for beaches and nightlife. I loved Chiang Mai’s food and visiting Doi Suthep. If you’re already staying in Krabi, Chiang Mai gives you more variety. Check northern air quality if your trip falls in the smoke-season months.
Krabi was my favorite, especially for scenery and time around Railay. Phuket suits travelers who want a beach base with nightlife options, though the area you stay in matters. On a short trip, choose one southern base if you want to avoid another hotel change and transfer day.
For a qualifying ten-day tourist visit, ordinary U.S. passport holders can use the 30-day visa exemption effective September 15, 2026. Meet the entry conditions and complete the free TDAC separately. Recheck the Thai embassy or consulate before departure, especially if you have already made multiple visits that year.
November to February is generally a good window for this Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi route. Northern smoke can affect February to April, while the Andaman coast gets monsoon conditions around May to October. Check current air quality and sea forecasts, and leave room for weather-related changes.
My experience included meeting other solo travelers and continuing to Phuket with a woman I met at Chai Lai Orchid. That is my personal experience, not a guarantee about every situation. Arrange reliable transport, share your plans with someone you trust and choose accommodation carefully. My solo-travel guide covers how I approach those decisions.
Only if you’re experienced, comfortable and appropriately licensed. I enjoyed riding to Doi Suthep and used a motorbike during my trip, but you can follow this itinerary using other transport. Check your license and travel insurance before you ride, wear a helmet and choose a car when conditions exceed your ability.

Where to Go After Thailand
My next stop was Cambodia, starting in Siem Reap and continuing to Phnom Penh. If you have more time in the region, read my things to do in Phnom Penh guide before choosing how many days to add.
Vietnam is another option for a separate leg. My things to do in Ho Chi Minh City post and Southeast Asia travel guide can help you continue planning. Give the next country its own travel days instead of squeezing it into these ten.
