DALGONA COFFEE: The Creamiest, Thickest and Easiest Coffee Recipe in History

The Origination of Dalgona Coffee

Emerging as one of the biggest food trends of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dalgona Coffee has become the global quarantine drink. But before getting going into how it’s made, let’s dig into the coffees origin.

Dalgona Coffee (달고나), pronounced as dahl-guh-na, originates from South Korea, popularly known as the whipped coffee ordered in Macau by actor, Jung II-woo. Also known as the Korean honeycomb toffee, this whipped coffee made an appearance in the TV Show, Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant.

Honeycomb Toffee is a sugary toffee with a light, sponge-like texture. Its main ingredients are baking brown sugar, corn or golden syrup, and sometimes vinegar.

Thanks to Hannah Cho’s Channel (@imhannahcho) for showcasing this Korean drink and making this TikTik Coffee go viral. Now, you can find those who are making the whipped drink at home under hashtag #dalgonacoffeechallenge.

What is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona Coffee is a beverage made by equally whipping instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. What’s so special about this simply made drink is that the longer you stir the ingredients, the thicker and creamier the mix gets.

Disciplined in the kitchen or not, get ready to work out your arm muscles. Yes, it is achievable to make Dalgona Coffee without a hand mixer, but expect to whisk the mix for about 15 minutes. However, if you want to shave off time and a sore arm the next day, use a Coffee Blender or an electric whisk and mix the ingredients for about a minute.

After achieving the mix, scoop a few spoonfuls of the Dalgona mix on top of a cup of cold or hot milk. This will give you the ultimate whipped coffee recipe. And as a cherry on top, top the coffee with powder, cocoa, honey or crumbled biscuits.

Dalgona Coffee vs. Phenti Hui Coffee

As we all know, Dalgona has become the worldwide, quarantine drink. Similarly, this quarantine drink is created alike to the Indian beverage, phenti hui coffee, phitti hui coffee, or beaten coffee.

However, there is one slight difference between the two. With Phenti Hui or Phitti Hui Coffee, milk is poured on top of the whipped mix. With Dalgona Coffee, the whipped mix is scooped on top of the milk.

How to Drink Dalgona Coffee?

Last but not least, if you didn’t catch on already, here is the last step to the delicious cup of whipped coffee. Now that you have the whip made, you have the option to drink this trending South Korean drink either hot or cold.

If you’re drinking it hot, add one cup of warm, steamed milk. Then, add 2-3 scoops of the Dalgona whip. I would let the whip sit in the cup for a minute for the whip to melt. Finally, to add a little touch, drink your warm latte with some cookies. That will hit the spot.

If you’re drinking it cold, first add a few ice cubes. Then, add one cup of cold milk of your choice and 2-3 scoops of the Dalgona whip. Finally, add a touch to your drink with brownies on the side. For me, brownies always taste better with colder milk.
